The Punjab government has revised the route of Lahore’s first electric tram project once again, delaying the launch of the long-awaited public transport initiative.

Under the latest proposal, the tram will operate through the Central Business District (CBD), Gulberg, Jail Road, and Istanbul Chowk. Canal Road, which was previously part of the planned route, has been removed due to environmental and technical concerns.

Officials said the decision was made to avoid large-scale tree cutting and address other challenges associated with constructing the route along Canal Road.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar said the electric tram first arrived in Lahore in July 2025 and was later showcased during a test run and public exhibition at Expo Centre Lahore in August 2025.

The project has undergone several revisions since its inception. Initial plans proposed a 27-kilometre “Yellow Line” corridor from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura.

Authorities later considered a trackless tram system and explored routes passing through Kalma Chowk, Liberty Market, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road.

The electric tram project is part of Punjab’s broader strategy to introduce environmentally friendly and modern public transport solutions in Lahore. However, repeated route changes have delayed its implementation, leaving the final timeline for operations uncertain.
