The private company operating the Lahore Metro Bus Service on the 27-kilometer Gajjumata-Shahdara route has announced that it will suspend operations from August 11 after failing to resolve a dispute with the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA) over rising fuel costs and other financial issues.
The company issued a final notice to the PMA, saying it had exhausted its financial resources and could no longer continue operations without fuel supplied by the authority. The company cited a July 29 court order directing the PMA to provide fuel from its own sources.
The company said a meeting with PMA officials on August 6 failed to produce a solution. It warned that the service would remain suspended unless the PMA immediately complied with the court order.
A senior company official said rising diesel prices had significantly increased operating costs. He said the existing fuel reimbursement formula did not cover the company’s full fuel expenses, forcing it to cover the shortfall through its own funds and borrowing.
A senior PMA official confirmed the dispute and said the authority had challenged the court order. He also said the PMA would invoke a contractual provision allowing the appointment of arbitrators to resolve the dispute.
The official acknowledged that the PMA could not provide fuel without government approval. He said the authority had arranged some buses from outside the existing system to keep the service running if the company stops operations on August 11.
