Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has ordered the restoration of a program providing free medicines to underprivileged cancer patients, directing its expansion across the province to ensure access to treatment without cost.

The decision was taken during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Peshawar to review proposals under the Annual Development Program for 2026-27, covering health, agriculture, youth affairs, sports, and relief sectors.

The chief minister termed healthcare a key priority and instructed officials to immediately restart the free medicine initiative and extend it to all districts. He also directed the allocation of funds for the early completion of the Khyber Institute of Child Health and asked authorities to approach the federal government for additional resources.

The meeting also focused on water management, with directions to prepare plans for rainwater and floodwater harvesting in major cities to address water shortages and improve groundwater levels.

Several major health projects were also reviewed, including the Khan Institute of Organ Transplant, a proposed Health City and General Hospital in Peshawar, medical complexes in Malakand and Kohat, and breast cancer screening centers in five divisional headquarters.

Additional proposals included an oncology center, a burn center, and a kidney center in Mardan, along with a clinical tower in Swabi.
