In a landmark move for inclusivity, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prisons Department has appointed its first transgender warder, marking a major step toward diversity in law enforcement.
According to officials, Sobia Khan, also known as Bebo, has been recruited in Scale 7 under a designated quota for transgender individuals.
Authorities said the appointment reflects the government’s commitment to providing equal employment opportunities to marginalised communities.
Following her induction, she is expected to be posted at either Peshawar Central Jail or the department’s headquarters, depending on administrative requirements.
Officials described the move as a progressive initiative aimed at increasing the representation of transgender individuals in public sector institutions.
In recent years, the province has taken steps to integrate the transgender community into government roles as part of broader social reforms.
The appointment is being viewed as a milestone in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where employment opportunities for transgender individuals have traditionally been limited.
Observers believe such initiatives can promote economic empowerment, reduce social stigma, and encourage greater acceptance of transgender individuals in mainstream society.
