The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has officially launched its “KP Open Wi-Fi” project, with Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi inaugurating the initiative to provide free internet access at key public locations across Peshawar.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the chief minister said the first phase of the project will offer free Wi-Fi at major government hospitals and public transport facilities in Peshawar. He also announced that the service will soon be extended to all public universities and colleges across the province.

Afridi said the government plans to gradually expand the project beyond Peshawar. In the next phase, free public Wi-Fi will be rolled out in Abbottabad, Mardan, Swat, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan, covering all divisional headquarters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Highlighting the province’s digital transformation efforts, the chief minister said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has already achieved 70 to 80 percent progress toward digital governance, adding that the government is working to make public services paperless in phases.

He said the initiative aligns with PTI founder Imran Khan’s vision of making digital services accessible to every citizen and noted that internet connectivity is creating new employment and business opportunities for young people.

Afridi also welcomed the rapid growth of Pakistan’s e-commerce sector, saying it has opened new avenues for entrepreneurship and economic activity. He stressed that creating economic opportunities for the youth remains a key responsibility of the government.

The chief minister criticized internet slowdowns and shutdowns, saying such disruptions negatively affect young people, businesses, and the digital economy. He also pointed out that many merged districts still lack basic telecommunications infrastructure, with some areas having neither reliable internet nor mobile phone coverage.

Concluding his address, Afridi said the provincial government considers public service its top priority and expressed confidence that the 2026-27 fiscal year would bring greater peace, development, and prosperity to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
