A dangerous trend has emerged in Karachi, where residents have started storing gas in plastic balloons amid worsening gas shortages, raising serious safety concerns.
In areas like Orangi Town, particularly Mominabad, locals say prolonged gas load-shedding and low pressure have forced them to adopt risky alternatives to meet daily cooking needs.
Residents reported that specially designed plastic balloons, costing between Rs1,000 and Rs1,500, are filled when gas supply briefly resumes. These balloons are then used throughout the day as a makeshift gas source.
Many described the method as a last resort due to the lack of reliable gas supply, saying they have no other practical option for household cooking.
However, safety experts have strongly warned against the practice, calling it extremely hazardous. They cautioned that gas-filled balloons can act like “mobile bombs” and may explode due to minor sparks, friction, or pressure changes.
The presence of such devices inside homes has heightened fears of fires and explosions, especially in densely populated areas.
Experts and analysts have urged authorities and gas utility companies to take immediate action to improve supply and prevent the spread of this life-threatening practice.
