Residents in several parts of Karachi faced gas outages on Eid ul Azha despite an earlier announcement by Sui Southern Gas Company that there would be no gas loadshedding during the three days of Eid.
Consumers in Shadman, UP, Keamari, Jackson Market and Shireen Jinnah Colony reported gas suspension. Residents of Akhtar Colony, North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, New Karachi and other areas also complained that they were deprived of gas supply.
The outages caused difficulties for households on Eid, when gas demand usually increases because of cooking and meal preparation.
Residents said the problem was not low gas pressure. They claimed there was no gas in the pipelines at all.
Many consumers said they had to use expensive LPG because of the disruption in supply. They added that this created additional financial pressure at a time when citizens are already paying high utility bills and taxes.
The situation drew criticism from residents, who questioned why consumers in Pakistan’s largest commercial city were facing gas shortages despite paying bills and taxes.
The complaints came even though SSGC had announced that gas loadshedding would not take place during the three Eid days.
Residents said the company failed to provide uninterrupted supply on a day when households needed gas the most.
The disruption also added to wider civic concerns in Karachi during Eid, as citizens in some areas also complained about delays in lifting animal waste.
