Karachi’s South Zone police have prepared a comprehensive anti-drug policy in collaboration with the heads of 22 universities and schools to counter the growing threat of narcotics in educational institutions.

South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Syed Asad Raza said the policy has been introduced to protect students from substance abuse and ensure a safe, healthy, and drug-free learning environment.

According to the DIG, the policy is based on prevention, early intervention, parental involvement, rehabilitation, institutional accountability, and lawful enforcement.

He said the initiative aims to keep educational institutions free from drugs, protect students from narcotics and other harmful substances, and raise awareness about the physical, psychological, social, and legal consequences of drug abuse.

The policy also focuses on stronger coordination among educational institutions, parents, healthcare professionals, and law enforcement agencies.

DIG Raza said this cooperation will help identify students who need support at an early stage and provide them with counseling, intervention, and rehabilitation.

He added that the policy is also aimed at stopping drug suppliers, peddlers, and criminal elements from targeting students or entering educational environments.

Under the policy, anti-drug committees will be formed in schools, colleges, and universities. These committees will include institutional heads, teachers, parents, and law enforcement officials.

Educational institutions will also organize regular seminars and awareness campaigns to educate students about the dangers of drug abuse.

DIG Raza said it has also been proposed that parents or legal guardians sign a drug prevention consent and responsibility declaration at the time of admission or readmission.

The declaration would allow educational institutions to conduct reasonable and lawful drug-screening programs.

Schools, colleges, and universities will also be required to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in identifying and reporting individuals or groups involved in drug-related activities targeting students.
