The Directorate of College Education, Karachi region, has issued a circular directing employees to follow a formal dress code during office hours, saying casual or inappropriate attire is inconsistent with professional standards.
According to the circular, some employees, particularly male staff, were arriving at duty in T-shirts, jeans, tight-fitting clothes, slippers and fancy sunglasses. The directorate said such clothing would not be allowed during official working hours.
The notification instructed male teaching staff, especially those posted at government girls’ colleges, to wear decent and formal clothing, preferably a full-sleeved shirt with formal trousers or a traditional shalwar kameez. It also advised teachers to wear an academic gown with formal shoes while delivering lectures.
Female teaching staff were asked to wear decent, modest and professional attire that reflects the dignity of the teaching profession and maintains a respectful academic environment. They were also advised to wear an academic gown with formal shoes during lectures.
For non-teaching staff, particularly in government girls’ colleges, the circular said employees should wear neat, decent and official attire suited to their duties.
The directorate directed all principals of government colleges in Karachi to circulate the instructions among staff and ensure strict implementation. It warned that violations would be dealt with under applicable government rules and departmental regulations.
It further said T-shirts, jeans, tight-fitting clothes and fancy sunglasses are strictly prohibited for all employees during office hours.
