A company in Soja has developed a compact prayer room to help tourist attractions and businesses better accommodate Muslim visitors.
The product, called Prayer Space, was created by OM Kiki Co., a firm that manufactures welfare and support equipment.
The idea emerged after one of the company’s staff members traveled around Okayama with a Muslim friend from Malaysia who struggled to find a suitable place to pray.
The company began selling the prayer room in December. The wooden structure stands 180 centimeters tall and features a 150-centimeter-square floor area.
It includes a waterproof, easy-to-clean mat to support Islamic cleansing rituals before prayer. A movable qibla marker on the ceiling also helps users identify the direction of Makkah.
Muslims are required to pray several times a day, making access to clean and private prayer facilities important while traveling or working.
According to a survey of Muslims who visited Japan, 72 percent of men and 79 percent of women said the availability of a prayer space influences their travel destination choices.
The product’s developer said the company hopes to expand access to prayer facilities across Japan, starting in Okayama, to make travel and workplaces more welcoming for Muslim communities.
