Pakistan has been penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate in their Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign opener against India at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The ICC announced that Pakistan was fined five percent of their match fees after being ruled one over short of the required rate once time allowances were taken into account.

Trudy Anderson of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana accepted the charge after it was leveled by on-field umpires Claire Polosak and Jacquline Williams, third umpire Eloise Sheridan and fourth umpire Sue Redfern. As a result, no formal hearing was required.

The penalty added to Pakistan’s difficult start to the 12-team tournament after they suffered a 64-run defeat against India in their opening match.

India chose to bat first and posted a strong total of 170-6 in 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana led the innings with an anchoring half-century, while wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh added a quick 34-run cameo late in the innings.

Pakistan were bowled out for 106 in 17 overs in response. Opener Muneeba Ali fought hard with a 41-run knock, but Pakistan failed to build enough partnerships.

Apart from Muneeba, only Aliya Riaz, who scored 18, and top-order batters Gull Feroza and Ayesha Zafar, who made 12 each, reached double figures.

India’s bowling attack dominated the chase, led by Deepti Sharma, who claimed a five-wicket haul.

Pakistan will next face South Africa, who currently sit at the bottom of Group A, at Edgbaston on June 17.
