Medical waste, including human placenta, used syringes, and sanitary pads, has allegedly been found dumped in an unsafe manner at Sobhraj Maternity Home, a hospital operated by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
According to reports, large quantities of medical waste were discovered within the hospital premises, raising concerns about infection control and waste disposal practices.
Medical experts warned that human placenta should be stored in leak-proof biohazard bags or designated containers and disposed of separately from other infectious waste. They added that improper disposal of blood-contaminated waste and used syringes increases the risk of spreading infectious diseases such as hepatitis and HIV.
Responding to the reports, a KMC spokesperson said the hospital’s medical waste incinerator plant had recently been restored and that all medical waste is supposed to be disposed of through the facility.
The spokesperson added that the last inspection of medical waste management at Sobhraj Maternity Home was conducted around two months ago. A report has now been sought from the hospital administration, after which complete details of the matter will be made public.
