Huawei has introduced the Pura X Max, a larger version of its Pura X foldable smartphone. The new model builds on the company’s wide foldable concept, which sits between traditional flip phones and book-style foldables, making it the first passport-style foldable.

The Pura X Max brings bigger displays, a thinner body, stylus support, upgraded cameras, and a larger battery.

The Huawei Pura X Max features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.7-inch internal folding screen.

Compared with the original Pura X, the new model is noticeably larger while also being thinner. The phone measures 120mm tall and 85mm wide when folded, with an 11.2mm thickness. When unfolded, it expands to 166.5mm wide and 5.2mm thick. It weighs 229 grams.

The original Pura X used a 16:10 inner screen, while the Pura X Max adopts a more square book-style format. Its inner display has a resolution of 2,584 x 1,828 pixels with a 14.1:10 aspect ratio, while the cover screen has a resolution of 1,848 x 1,264 pixels with a similar ratio.

Both screens use LTPO 2.0 panels with a 1Hz to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 1,440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.

Huawei has also added support for the M-Pen 3 Mini stylus. The smaller stylus is designed specifically for this foldable form factor. Huawei also offers a dedicated case for the stylus and another case with a magnetic kickstand.

The frame is made from aluminum alloy. The phone carries IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust protection, water submersion resistance, and protection against high-temperature water jets. The outer screen is covered with second-generation Kunlun glass. The phone is launching in China in multiple color options.

The Pura X Max is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9030 Pro chipset.

Huawei said the processor delivers a 30% performance improvement over the Kirin 9020 used in the standard Pura X. Cooling is handled through a vapor chamber and graphene sheet combination. The device runs HarmonyOS 6.1 out of the box instead of Android.

The rear camera setup includes a 50MP main sensor with optical image stabilization and a variable aperture lens ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0.

It also includes a 50MP periscope telephoto camera with an f/2.2 lens and OIS, along with a 12.5MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 lens. All three rear cameras use RYYB sensors, replacing green sub-pixels with yellow ones to improve light capture.

For selfies and video calls, Huawei has included two 8MP front-facing cameras, one on each display. The camera system uses Huawei’s XMAGE imaging engine and a second-generation color sensor. Compared with the original Pura X, the Max model upgrades from an 8MP telephoto and 40MP ultra-wide camera, while also improving zoom capability.

The Huawei Pura X Max packs a 5,300 mAh battery, larger than the 4,720 mAh unit in the original model. It supports 66W wired SuperCharge and 50W wireless SuperCharge.

Pricing in China starts at $1,615 for the 12GB + 256GB model. The 12GB + 512GB version costs $1,760, while the 16GB + 512GB model is priced at $1,905. The top-end 16GB + 1TB variant costs $2,055.

Global availability has not been confirmed.

Secondary display: LTPO2 OLED, 1B colors, 120Hz, 1440Hz PWM, 5.4 inches, 1264 x 1848 pixels, 412 PPI, Huawei Kunlun Glass 2
