The federal government has started developing the historic Shah Allah Ditta Caves into a world-class Buddhist heritage site with modern visitor facilities ahead of the upcoming Gandhara Conference.
Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi announced the plan during a visit to the site, where he reviewed the ongoing conservation and development work. Parliamentary Secretary Farah Naz Akbar also accompanied him.
The minister directed authorities to complete the development work as soon as possible so the government can formally inaugurate the site during the Gandhara Conference, scheduled for September or October.
Officials from the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums informed the minister that a Buddhist-era stupa stands on a hillside opposite the caves but remains difficult to see from the site. Aurangzeb Khichi directed officials to install a modern telescope to give Buddhist monks and other visitors a clearer view of the historic structure.
The minister also instructed authorities to prominently display the history and heritage of Buddhism throughout the caves to highlight the site’s historical and religious significance.
Aurangzeb Khichi said the government is upgrading the Shah Allah Ditta Caves according to international standards. He added that the site will include a cafeteria, gift shop, and other visitor facilities for local and international tourists. He also directed officials to install decorative lighting to enhance the site’s appearance during the evening.
