An operation theatre at Nishtar Hospital in Multan has been sealed after a suspected HIV-positive patient was operated on alongside other general patients.

Hospital administration confirmed that the theatre was shut down after the patient’s test report came back positive a day after the procedure.

According to the hospital’s medical superintendent, a total of seven surgeries were carried out in the same operation theater.

Officials said HIV testing is mandatory before surgery under existing rules, but the patient was operated on before the report was received. The test result was confirmed positive the following day, prompting the sealing of the theatre.

The hospital administration also said more than 10 doctors and paramedical staff who were on duty over two days have undergone HIV testing following the incident.

An inquiry committee has also been formed to investigate the matter. The committee is being headed by Additional MS Dr. Lubna.
