Pakistan is expected to appoint former South African first-class cricketer Mike Smith as the national Test team’s batting coach ahead of the upcoming three-match series against England.
Mike Smith is likely to take charge once the appointment process is completed.
The Level 4-qualified coach has previously worked with Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), giving him valuable experience within Pakistan’s domestic cricket setup.
Former Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq has served as the team’s interim batting coach since April 2026. He joined the coaching staff led by Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) began its search for a permanent batting coach in May by publicly inviting applications for the position. The application deadline was June 7, after which the board began evaluating candidates.
Pakistan will face England in a three-match Test series beginning later this month. The opening Test will be played at Headingley in Leeds from August 19 to 23, followed by the second Test at Lord’s from August 27 to 31.
The third and final Test will take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9 to 13.
Mike Smith’s expected appointment is part of the PCB’s efforts to strengthen the national team’s batting department ahead of the challenging away series.
