The Senate Standing Committee on Finance has sharply criticized Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials over the auction of seized dry milk allegedly worth Rs. 54.4 million for only Rs. 20 million, while demanding a detailed report within one week.
During the committee meeting, lawmakers raised serious questions about the handling of the seized goods and possible irregularities in the auction process.
Committee member Senator Jan Muhammad said Customs Enforcement itself had assessed the value of the dry milk consignment at Rs. 54.4 million, yet the seized stock was auctioned for nearly Rs. 20 million despite the submission of supporting documents related to the goods.
Lawmakers also questioned discrepancies regarding the number of seized bags stored in warehouses. Senator Talha Mahmood asked whether some of the 2,000 dry milk bags had gone missing from the warehouse before the auction process. He further questioned how many Federal Board of Revenue warehouses had experienced fire incidents over the years.
The senator alleged that warehouse fires often occur when attempts are made to conceal irregularities or evidence.
Committee members expressed concern over transparency and accountability in the management of seized goods and auction procedures carried out by tax authorities.
The Senate committee directed FBR officials to submit a comprehensive report within one week explaining the valuation process, storage details, auction procedures, and any discrepancies linked to the seized dry milk consignment.
