Epic Games has announced Unreal Engine 6, the next major version of its widely used game and CGI engine, according to TheGamer and PC Gamer . The announcement was made during the Paris Major of the Rocket League Championship Series.
DiscussingFilm shared a short clip of the reveal on X. The footage showed updated Rocket League visuals, including shinier cars, cinematic camera angles, and in-engine gameplay. The trailer described it as a “new era” and “new engine” before showing the Unreal Engine 6 logo.

The announcement is notable because Rocket League still runs on Unreal Engine 3, the engine used by many games from the Xbox 360 era. Unreal Engine 5 launched four years ago, while Unreal Engine 4 arrived 12 years ago.
That makes the move to Unreal Engine 6 a major technical shift for Rocket League. However, Epic has usually avoided standalone sequel-style resets for its live service games, unlike titles such as Overwatch and Destiny .
Fortnite previously moved from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 without disrupting its large in-game economy. That makes Rocket League a more obvious choice for the first Unreal Engine 6 showcase, as Fortnite is already running on newer engine technology.
Unreal Engine is one of the most widely used game engines in the industry. Major studios that previously relied on their own technology, including CD Projekt, have moved to Unreal in recent years. The engine is also widely used by indie developers and has a growing role in film production, including CG work for companies such as Disney.
The Unreal Engine 5 generation has delivered strong adoption and high visual quality in games such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Avowed . However, it has also faced criticism over performance and optimization, especially on PC.
PC Gamer noted that Fortnite runs well on Unreal Engine 5, but many players still associate the engine with performance problems in other games. Several comments under the DiscussingFilm post also called on Epic to fix Unreal Engine 5 before moving ahead with Unreal Engine 6.
The Unreal Engine 6 reveal was more restrained than the Unreal Engine 5 showcase at The Game Awards in 2021, which included a Matrix-themed open-world demo on consoles. This time, Epic used Rocket League to show a shorter teaser rather than a large technical demo.
The trailer also showed other Epic experiences, including Lego Fortnite and regular Fortnite , alongside Rocket League . That may point toward Epic’s larger interoperability plans.
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney previously said Unreal Engine 6 is intended to connect Unreal Engine’s high-end development tools with the simpler Unreal Editor for Fortnite. He also said the goal is to let developers build once and deploy across platforms, such as Fortnite or other games that use the same technology base
