The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has dismissed Brendon McCullum as head coach of England’s Test team. However, he will continue leading the national white-ball teams until the conclusion of next year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The decision leaves England searching for both a new Test captain and a new head coach following Ben Stokes’ recent retirement.
McCullum’s removal comes only three months after the ECB publicly supported him despite England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia.
Brendon McCullum said he was “gutted” by the decision but respected the ECB’s position. He added that his focus would now be on giving his full commitment to England’s white-ball teams and helping them continue to improve.
ECB chief executive Richard Gould had expressed confidence in McCullum in March, saying the former New Zealand captain could learn from the disappointing Ashes campaign.
However, the board decided to make a change after England suffered a 2-1 home Test series defeat to New Zealand, with the next Ashes less than a year away.
Gould credited McCullum with bringing new energy to the Test team and helping produce several memorable victories. He said the ECB believed the time was right for a change as England targets an Ashes victory next summer.
Brendon McCullum was appointed England’s Test coach in 2022. Alongside Stokes, he transformed the team’s approach by introducing an aggressive style of cricket that produced 10 wins in his first 11 Tests.
However, England’s results declined significantly over the past year. McCullum leaves the role without securing a Test series victory against either Australia or India.
His overall record stands at 27 wins, two draws and 20 defeats. England lost seven of its final nine Tests under his leadership.
Brendon McCullum’s tenure began and ended with home Test series against his native New Zealand. England swept the Black Caps 3-0 in his first assignment before suffering a 2-1 defeat last month in the series that also marked the end of Stokes’ Test captaincy.
After England’s heavy defeat at Trent Bridge, McCullum said his commitment to English cricket “has never wavered” and suggested that he expected to remain in charge. Less than two weeks later, the ECB confirmed his departure from the Test role.
England managing director Rob Key had expanded McCullum’s responsibilities to include the white-ball teams when renewing his contract through the end of 2027.
Despite losing the Test position, the 43-year-old will continue overseeing England’s limited-overs teams through the 2027 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.
The ECB confirmed that the search for McCullum’s successor will begin immediately. The appointment will mark a return to the split coaching structure England used between 2022 and 2024.
Reported candidates include Andrew Flintoff, Richard Dawson, Ryan Campbell and Justin Langer.
Reflecting on his time as Test coach, McCullum said he was proud of what the team had achieved and grateful to the players, staff and supporters.
“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together,” McCullum said.
He added that the team had experienced major successes as well as difficult periods, but said those challenges were part of the role. McCullum also said he would continue supporting the Test team and believed the players had the talent to achieve further success.
