England fast bowler Brydon Carse could be in doubt for the second Test against Pakistan after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) launched an investigation into a nightclub incident in Derby.
A video circulating on social media shows Carse in handcuffs while surrounded by police officers outside a nightclub on Saturday night. Carse can be seen speaking to Durham teammate Matthew Potts while former England captain Ben Stokes is also visible in the background.
The ECB confirmed that it is investigating the incident.
“We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible,” the board said in a statement.
Carse was reportedly detained briefly by police but was not arrested and was released without charge. Derbyshire Constabulary was contacted for comment, while Durham declined to comment.
The 31-year-old is part of England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s. He was released to play for Durham after missing out on England’s playing XI for the first Test at Headingley.
Carse scored 26 runs and took match figures of 2/82 as Durham defeated Derbyshire by 338 runs inside three days. The incident reportedly occurred while he was celebrating the victory with his Durham teammates.
He was scheduled to rejoin the England squad in London on Monday ahead of two training days at Lord’s before the second Test against Pakistan on Thursday. However, his involvement could now be uncertain as the ECB assesses the situation.
Carse has yet to feature for England this summer after missing the series against New Zealand with wrist and elbow injuries. He later returned to action, was added to the ODI squad against India and earned a place in the Test squad after proving his fitness in The Hundred.
The incident comes amid increased scrutiny of England players’ off-field conduct and their relationship with alcohol.
Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were involved in a late-night incident during the previous Test summer. They were cleared of involvement in violent conduct but received written warnings for breaching contractual obligations.
England managing director Rob Key later introduced updated guidance on alcohol consumption, although the restrictions were subsequently relaxed.
Joe Root, who succeeded Stokes as Test captain, has also removed England’s midnight curfew, saying he trusts players to behave like “grown adults” away from the field.
The latest development is likely to bring fresh attention to England’s off-field discipline ahead of the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s.
