A report submitted to the Sindh health authorities has revealed that at least 45 critical machines are non-functional at Liaquat University Hospital, severely affecting healthcare services at one of the province’s largest tertiary care facilities.

The report was prepared following a visit by Fayyaz Abbasi and Zain Ul Abiden Memon, highlighting major deficiencies impacting patients, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to the findings, the non-operational equipment includes three MRI machines, four CT scanners, six digital X-ray units, 10 ultrasound machines, and 17 anesthesia units.

Officials estimate that repairing these machines will cost around Rs694 million, with each MRI alone requiring approximately Rs30 million.

The report states that the equipment has remained out of service due to insufficient maintenance funding.

It also flagged poor sanitation conditions in emergency and outpatient departments, along with inadequate facilities in intensive care units and general wards, including non-functional lifts and shortages of essential medical equipment.

Serious concerns were raised about the cardiology department, where no surgeries have been performed in the past nine years due to a lack of surgeons.

Although 10 cardiology consultants are currently posted, the department is limited to consultation services, with plans for angioplasty yet to materialise due to funding constraints.

The report also revealed that a Thallium Scan Machine procured in 2017-18 remains unused due to the absence of a key component, which officials say cannot be imported. As a result, expensive equipment has been lying idle for years.

Officials warned that these shortcomings are disproportionately affecting patients who rely on public healthcare services, increasing public concern over the hospital’s deteriorating condition.

To address the crisis, the report recommends reallocating Rs294 million for urgent maintenance and approving an additional Rs398 million project to upgrade emergency services.
