Transporters and Urban Resource Centre Joint Director Zahid Farooq have raised concerns over the design and traffic capacity of Karachi’s Karimabad underpass, warning that the project could face congestion and operational issues despite its recent opening.

Built at a cost of Rs. 3.46 billion, the underpass stretches around 1,080 meters and is being described as Karachi’s longest tunnel-type underpass.

Officials from the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) said delays in the project were mainly caused by utility shifting work involving K-Electric, Sui Southern Gas Company, and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation.

Muhammad Ilyas of the Karachi Transport Alliance warned that congestion could worsen near Musa Colony and APWA Girls College due to narrow roads, encroachments, and Qingqi rickshaws, particularly on the Route 7C corridor.

Zahid Farooq criticized the underpass design and said the structure lacked an emergency lane despite its unusual length. He warned that even a single vehicle breakdown inside the underpass could completely block traffic and create major inconvenience for commuters.

KDA engineers acknowledged that only two heavy vehicles can pass simultaneously through the underpass and confirmed that no dedicated emergency lane was included in the design because of limited available space.
