The permanent campus of COMSATS University Islamabad, Abbottabad Campus, is facing a possible shutdown because of a lack of government funding.
The university is currently operating from a leased premises at Tobe Camp, which is owned by the Pakistan Army. Around 6,000 students enrolled at the Abbottabad campus are expected to be shifted to the permanent campus once the project is completed.
The lease for the Tobe Camp campus was extended in 2001 for a period of 30 years, before the original lease expired in 2003.
In May 2020, CUI submitted a PC-I titled “Infrastructure Development of COMSATS University Islamabad Permanent Campus, Abbottabad.” The project proposed the construction of a modern academic facility spread over 324,540 square feet for the 6,000 students currently studying at the Abbottabad campus.
The PC-I was approved at a cost of Rs. 3,485.795 million by the Central Development Working Party in its meeting held on May 24, 2021.
However, the project is still awaiting inclusion in the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) share of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Due to the lack of funding, most of the infrastructure work at the new campus remains pending.
