An eight-year-old child was killed and four others were injured after the roof of a school building collapsed during a summer camp in Lahore’s Baghbanpura area.
According to Rescue 1122, the incident took place during renovation work at the school while a summer camp was underway and several children were present inside the building.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the site after the collapse and shifted the injured to hospital. One critically injured child, identified as Abu Bakar, later died of his injuries.
The injured were identified as workers Khizar, 35, Shakeel, 38, Abdul Latif, 32, and Nazeer, 42. Officials said other children present at the site were rescued safely.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat took notice of reports that an unauthorized summer camp was being held at the private school and sought a report from the District Education Authority.
The incident has raised fresh questions, particularly because summer camps across Punjab have been closed since June 30.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the collapse.
The latest incident comes just days after a roof collapse at a tuition center in Lahore’s Kahna area killed 14 children and injured several others, intensifying concerns over safety standards at private educational and learning facilities in the city.
After the Kahna tragedy, the Lahore Education Authority announced stricter monitoring of tuition centers, coaching academies, and educational buildings. It also ordered an emergency survey and made registration of private institutes mandatory within three days.
The survey is aimed at collecting details about safety arrangements, student enrolment, and other operational matters at private academies and tuition centers. Based on its findings, the authority is expected to prepare a report and frame a new policy for the registration and operation of private tuition centers.
Officials have also formed special inspection teams comprising zonal heads and Assistant Education Officers to identify unsafe and unregistered tuition centers and submit their findings within the set deadline.
