The Balochistan government has approved a series of major education reforms aimed at increasing literacy rates, improving access to education, and enhancing learning facilities across the province.

The decisions were taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti.

Under the proposed reforms, the government will abolish the mandatory school uniform requirement at the primary level and allow boys and girls to receive basic education in the same school.

A policy to declare primary schools “gender-free” will be presented at the next cabinet meeting for approval.

To improve literacy rates, the provincial government has also decided to introduce a double-shift teaching system in 900 schools across Balochistan. In addition, salaries of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) teachers, which had remained frozen for several years, will be significantly increased.

During the meeting, the School’s Education Department informed officials that additional classrooms will be constructed in 3,000 single-room schools across the province by next year.

The government also plans to introduce standardized reading and writing materials in public schools to improve educational outcomes.

Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced the elimination of the “mat culture” in all functional government schools, directing authorities to provide desks to every school so that no child has to sit on the floor while receiving an education.

He said it was unacceptable for children to continue studying while seated on mats when education systems around the world had advanced significantly.

He warned that action would be taken against responsible officials if students were still found sitting on mats after the implementation deadline.

The chief minister also announced that he would personally conduct surprise inspections of schools in remote areas and, if necessary, travel by helicopter to assess educational facilities and monitor progress.

The meeting further reviewed a comprehensive reform agenda for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget, focusing on improvements in education, healthcare, and law and order. Bugti emphasized that promoting confidence and self-esteem among children remains a key priority of the provincial government
