Amazon and Globalstar have announced a merger agreement that would expand Amazon’s low-earth orbit satellite ambitions while also extending satellite services tied to Apple devices.
The deal gives Amazon control of Globalstar, the satellite company that currently supports emergency and connectivity features on Apple iPhone and Apple Watch devices.
Amazon has been developing its own low-earth orbit satellite network, known as Amazon Leo, for the past few years.
The project is aimed at improving connectivity in remote and underserved areas and competing with SpaceX’s Starlink network.
While Amazon’s service is not yet operating at Starlink’s scale, the merger would strengthen its position in the growing satellite communications market.
As part of the agreement, current and future Apple devices are expected to continue using satellite services through the Globalstar system as it becomes integrated into Amazon Leo.
Amazon executive Panos Panay said the company is excited to support Apple users through the Leo Direct-to-Device system and plans to work with mobile network partners to expand coverage globally.
Apple first introduced satellite connectivity in 2022 with the iPhone 14.
The company partnered with Globalstar for the service and also invested in the satellite operator.
Reports previously said Apple declined a direct partnership with Starlink after disagreements with Elon Musk, according to The Information , cited by 9to5Mac .
Amazon now faces the challenge of scaling its Leo network.
CEO Andy Jassy said a mid-2026 launch is planned, with several thousand additional satellites expected to be deployed in the coming years.
Amazon has also introduced a new aviation antenna designed to deliver download speeds of up to one gigabit for commercial aircraft. Delta has already signed up, with the service expected to begin in 2028.
Starlink currently has airline agreements with carriers including Qatar Airways and British Airways for in-flight connectivity.
