Apple is reportedly developing a new iPhone security feature that could automatically lock the device if it detects that it has been stolen, 9to5Mac reported.
The feature is designed to reduce damage when someone snatches an iPhone from a user’s hand while the user is walking or standing in public. If triggered, it would lock the device and help prevent thieves from accessing personal data and other sensitive information.
In many phone snatching cases, thieves quickly run or ride away after grabbing the device. According to the report, Apple’s system would use signals from the iPhone’s accelerometer and measure the distance from a paired Apple Watch to decide whether the phone has been snatched.
The feature would not only lock the iPhone. It would also follow the same rules as Apple’s Stolen Device Protection system.
That means access to certain parts of the phone could be restricted if the device detects that it is in an unfamiliar location or connected to an unfamiliar Wi-Fi network.
Apple already offers several tools to protect stolen iPhones and the data stored on them. However, this would be the company’s first reported attempt to automatically detect when an iPhone has been physically snatched from a user and lock it down immediately.
There is no confirmed launch date for the feature yet. However, WWDC 2026 is scheduled for June 8, and Apple could announce the feature there as part of its iOS 27 plans.
