Google is rolling out a new Quick Share feature that lets Android users send files to iPhones, iPads, and Macs through a QR code.
The feature gives Android users another way to share files with Apple devices if their phone does not yet support Quick Share’s AirDrop compatibility. Google’s support page says users can send content to an iPhone, iPad, or macOS device with a QR code, with both devices needing internet access for the transfer.
Android users can open Quick Share, select the files they want to send, and choose the QR code option.
The iPhone user can then scan the QR code with the Camera app. After that, the files open through a private download link in the default web browser.
Google says the shared files are end-to-end encrypted and uploaded to Google servers for transfer. The files do not use storage from the sender’s personal Google Drive account.
The uploaded files remain available for download for 24 hours.
Google also lists several limits for the feature. Users can share up to 10GB of files to iPhone, iPad, or macOS devices every 24 hours. They can also share up to 1,000 files in one session and send files to as many as 20 Apple device receivers at a time.
Google announced the feature during The Android Show: I/O Edition.
The QR code sharing feature is rolling out to Android devices now and is expected to become fully available within the next month, MacRumors reported.
The rollout comes as Google continues to expand Quick Share’s direct AirDrop compatibility across more Android phones. However, the QR code option gives users a simpler fallback method when direct AirDrop support is not available.
