YouTube has announced that it will make AI-generated and AI-altered content easier to identify on its platform.
Starting today, all videos that are meaningfully AI-altered or generated will show a more prominent AI label.
For long-form videos, YouTube will place the AI label below the video player and above the description.
For Shorts, the label will appear as an overlay directly on the video.
YouTube still mainly requires creators to disclose when their videos are AI-generated or meaningfully altered.
However, the platform now also has a content detection system that can analyze and flag AI-generated content, even if the creator does not manually label it.
If a video is incorrectly identified as AI-generated, creators can update the disclosure status in YouTube Studio.
However, the disclosure will remain if the video was made using YouTube’s own AI tools, such as Veo or Dream Screen, or if it includes C2PA metadata.
YouTube said the disclosure label will not affect how videos are recommended or monetized.
The company said the change is meant to increase transparency around AI-generated and AI-altered content.
