Google announced new AI-powered Android app creation tools at Google I/O 2026 on Tuesday, bringing the AI coding push directly into Android development.
The new feature is available through Google AI Studio, the company’s web-based development tool. Google says it can reduce Android app creation from weeks of setup and coding to just minutes.
Google says the feature can help both experienced developers and first-time creators.
Seasoned developers can use it to quickly prototype new app ideas, while beginners can use it to create simple Android apps without going through a long setup process.
The apps are built with Kotlin and Google’s Jetpack Compose toolkit.
Google says the AI-generated apps can also work with device hardware features.
The system supports integration with sensors and hardware tools such as GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC.
However, the apps are currently meant for personal use only. Google says publishing apps for family and friends is still on the roadmap.
Google said the feature could be used to create personal utilities, simple social apps, hardware-enabled experiences, and AI-powered experiences.
The move shows how Google is trying to make Android development faster by using AI to handle more of the early app creation process.
Google is also adding an AI overlay called Ask Play to the Play Store.
The feature lets users discover apps through natural language conversations instead of relying only on search terms or categories.
Google also plans to surface apps inside user conversations with Gemini.
This could help developers reach more users, as Gemini may recommend apps during normal conversations when they match what a user needs.
The change expands app discovery beyond the Play Store and gives developers another way to have their apps found across Google’s AI products.
