Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Lenovo, Honor, and other smartphone companies in China under the Gold Standard Alliance have announced a new effort aimed at improving Android device performance.

The initiative focuses on reducing lag, overheating, random app crashes, and other issues linked to inconsistent memory management across Android phones.

The alliance said it will soon introduce a unified memory management standard for developers.

The new framework is designed to align with changes expected in Android 17 and aims to help apps use memory more efficiently across different devices.

The goal is to create a more consistent experience regardless of phone brand, hardware, or Android skin.

According to the alliance, app development has become more difficult as software grows more complex and demands more memory.

At the same time, differences in hardware and software customization across Android devices make optimization harder.

The group said this increases development costs, extends testing cycles, and can lead to problems such as apps closing in the background, devices heating up, or performance slowing over time.

Google has already started tightening memory controls in Android 17. The upcoming version is expected to introduce clearer memory limits based on a device’s total RAM and address severe cases such as memory leaks.

The alliance said its new “fair memory mechanism” will build on those system-level changes.

The initiative includes three main components.

The first is a unified standard that defines how much memory apps should use.

The second is a notification system that alerts apps when memory is running low, allowing them to free resources before the system intervenes.

The third is a set of contextual rules that determines when and how those warnings should appear.

Developers have until June 30, 2026, to update their apps.

The alliance said member companies will provide documentation and technical support during the transition.

The Gold Standard Alliance was established in 2021 as a non-profit initiative. Its members include Lenovo and several major Chinese smartphone makers.

The group also operates a certification program for apps that meet performance, stability, and efficiency standards across participating app stores.
