X has introduced new limits for unverified users on its social media platform. The company announced on Monday that the limits will apply to users who do not have the blue verified check mark next to their username.

X said the new technical limits are designed to reduce strain on the platform’s background systems and help cut down on downtime and error pages.

Under the new rules, unverified users can send up to 500 direct messages per day.

They can also publish 50 original posts and 200 replies per day. X said the daily update limit is further divided into smaller limits for semi-hourly intervals. Users can change their account email up to four times per hour.

X has also set a technical follow limit of 400 accounts per day. The company said this is only a technical account limit and that separate rules still prohibit aggressive following behavior.

Once an account follows 5,000 other accounts, further follow attempts will be limited by account-specific ratios.

X said API requests from all third-party applications are counted against the hourly API limit.

This means users who connect multiple third-party applications to their X account may reach the API limit faster.

X said users who reach a limit will receive an error message explaining which limit they have hit.

For time-based limits, including direct messages, posts, account email changes, and API requests, users will be able to try again after the limit period ends.

X also said the daily post limit of 2,400 updates is divided into semi-hourly intervals. If users hit their account update or post limit, the company advises them to try again after a few hours.

The restrictions mainly affect unverified users who use X heavily.

Users who want to avoid these limits can subscribe to X’s premium service and become verified on the platform.
