Microsoft is working to improve Windows 11 performance through its ongoing Windows K2 initiative.

A key part of the effort involves moving core Windows 11 elements to WinUI 3, Microsoft’s native Windows UI framework.

Microsoft is not only rebuilding parts of Windows 11, including the Start menu, using WinUI. The company is also improving WinUI itself.

In a GitHub post, Microsoft software engineer Beth Pan said the company wants WinUI 3 to become the best native UI platform for Windows apps and experiences, with performance as a main focus.

Pan said Microsoft is delivering performance improvements at multiple levels, including inside WinUI itself.

Microsoft has focused on launch times and used File Explorer and Notepad as performance benchmarks.

According to the company, File Explorer launch performance improved in several areas after changes to WinUI.

Allocations were reduced by 41%, transient allocations fell by 63%, function calls dropped by 45%, and time spent in WinUI code was reduced by 25%.

Microsoft said the changes will reach the development branch soon before moving to the winui3/main branch.

Pan said Microsoft is improving WinUI from the framework side while other Windows teams continue working on broader launch performance.

She said the teams are working together to make sure the improvements apply across the full user experience.

The WinUI work is part of a larger effort to make Windows 11 feel faster.

Microsoft is also using Low Latency Profile mode, which briefly boosts the CPU to maximum frequency for one to three seconds to improve operating system responsiveness.

The feature has faced criticism, although similar performance boosting systems exist on macOS, Linux, and other operating systems.

Windows 11 has faced criticism for slow loading times in core parts of the operating system.

Microsoft expects the move to WinUI, improvements to the framework itself, and features such as Low Latency Profile mode to make Windows 11 feel more responsive.
