The federal government has agreed to restore the supply of 35 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas to CNG stations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Thursday following talks between federal and provincial representatives in Islamabad.
According to officials who attended the meeting, CNG stations across the province will receive gas from 6am to 6pm. The decision came a day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a ministerial committee to discuss the suspension of gas supply to CNG stations in the province.
The meeting was attended by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Adviser to the Chief Minister on Finance Muzzammil Aslam, Opposition Leader in the KP Assembly Dr Ibadullah, federal officials, and representatives of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).
Officials said CNG stations in the province require around 40 to 45 mmcfd of gas daily, but supply had been suspended last month.
In a statement, Muzzammil Aslam said Article 158 of the Constitution states that gas should first be supplied to the province where it is produced, adding that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is Pakistan’s largest gas-producing province.
Governor Kundi also welcomed the decision and said all political stakeholders had united to resolve the issue affecting the province and its residents.
