The US Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, clearing the company to begin restoring foreign access after the models were taken offline in June.

Anthropic confirmed the decision in a post on X, saying it had received notice from the Commerce Department that the restrictions had been removed. The company said it would begin restoring access tomorrow and would provide another update soon.

Anthropic disabled access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 12 after receiving a US government directive requiring it to block the models for all foreign nationals, including people living or working inside the United States.

The company suspended the models globally because it could not reliably determine the nationality of every user in real time. The restriction also affected Anthropic employees who were foreign nationals and international businesses using the models.

The government cited national security authorities when issuing the directive. Anthropic said at the time that it had not received specific details explaining the national security concern behind the order.

We’ve received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

We'll begin restoring access tomorrow, and will share an update soon.

We’re grateful to our users for their patience, and to everyone who worked with us on…

The removal of the controls allows Anthropic to restore Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, although access may not return to every user at the same time while the company redeploys the systems.

Fable 5 was designed for long-running agent tasks and was generally available through Anthropic’s API and several cloud platforms before the suspension. Mythos 5 had more limited availability and was offered only to approved customers through Project Glasswing.

Anthropic did not provide a detailed restoration schedule or explain whether access would return simultaneously across Claude, its API, and third-party cloud services.

Anthropic thanked users for their patience during the suspension. It also thanked those who worked with the company to redeploy the models.

The company said it would share another update as the restoration process moves forward.
