The US government has released dozens of previously classified files related to alleged UFO sightings, with President Donald Trump’s administration calling it an effort to offer “unprecedented transparency” to the public.
The latest batch includes around 160 files containing documents, photos, and videos linked to what officials describe as unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP. The Defense Department said more material will be made public as additional records are declassified.
Despite the attention around the release, analysts said the newly published material does not provide any conclusive proof of alien technology or extraterrestrial life. Much of the information, they argued, had either already surfaced in earlier disclosures or added little beyond known incidents.
Among the more notable records is a 1947 report mentioning “flying discs”, along with grainy images captured during the Apollo 12 mission in 1969 and a transcript from Apollo 17 in 1972. In that exchange, astronaut Ronald Evans described seeing “very bright particles or fragments” drifting past as the spacecraft maneuvered near the moon.
The release is expected to reignite debate over long-standing government secrecy around UFO-related material. Trump said previous administrations had failed to be transparent on the issue and argued that the public should now decide for itself what the files reveal.
The move was welcomed by some lawmakers who have long pushed for more declassification, with more documents expected within the next month.
Still, critics questioned the timing of the release, describing it as a distraction from mounting political pressure on the White House, including criticism over the US military campaign against Iran and renewed demands for the release of other sensitive files.
Experts also urged caution in interpreting the new material. Some said the images and videos show that unexplained sightings have been documented, but stressed that this does not mean they are alien in origin or even fully mysterious.
