A senior envoy to US President Donald Trump has suggested that FIFA replace Iran with Italy in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The suggestion was made by US special envoy Paolo Zampolli, who confirmed that he had raised the idea with both Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He said Italy’s football history makes it a strong candidate despite failing to qualify.

“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,” Zampolli told. “I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a U.S.-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”

Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, missed out on qualification after losing a playoff to Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking its third consecutive absence from the tournament.

In contrast, Iran successfully qualified for its fourth straight World Cup. However, the country has raised concerns following the ongoing conflict and requested that its matches be moved from the United States to Mexico, a request FIFA has declined.

FIFA President Infantino has maintained that Iran is expected to participate and that matches will proceed as scheduled. Iranian officials have also stated that the team is continuing preparations, although final decisions depend on government authorities.

If Iran were to withdraw, FIFA would have full authority to select a replacement under Article Six of World Cup regulations.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is expected to push for a replacement team from Asia. The United Arab Emirates could be a leading candidate, despite having limited World Cup experience, with only one appearance in 1990 where they lost all three matches.

The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is scheduled to begin on June 11. Iran is currently set to open its campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles four days later.
