Meta has started rolling out messaging support for the web version of Threads, bringing one-on-one and group chats to desktop users.

The update expands Threads’ desktop functionality and brings it closer to competing social platforms such as X and Bluesky.

Connor Hayes, Meta’s head of Threads, said messaging support for the web was the most requested feature after direct messages were first introduced in July 2025.

Hayes said many of Threads’ most active users spend extended periods on the web version while working at their desks.

The updated desktop experience now includes a dedicated “Messages” tab that opens the DM inbox. Users can also access a “Requests” section to review incoming message requests.

The web version additionally supports message search and allows users to quickly start new conversations.

Meta told TechCrunch that users have been sending 30% more messages per week since the beginning of the year. The company said Threads now averages around 350 million direct messages every week.

Messaging has become a larger focus for Threads despite the platform originally launching without native direct messaging support.

Threads has also introduced a new Live Chats feature designed for real-time conversations during major events. The feature is launching first within the NBA Threads community during the playoffs.

Users can share messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions inside Live Chats. Up to 150 participants can actively send messages at the same time. Once the limit is reached, additional users can still view chats, react to messages, and join polls in spectator mode.

Since launching in 2023, Threads has steadily introduced new features as Meta works to expand the platform and compete with rival social networks.

The addition of web messaging and Live Chats signals a broader push to make conversations a central part of the Threads experience beyond standard posts and replies.
