The Senate Standing Committee on National Heritage and Culture has expressed serious concern over poor maintenance, security lapses, and cleanliness issues at the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi.

During a meeting chaired by Hidayatullah Khan at Parliament House, committee members highlighted multiple issues at the mausoleum premises, including the presence of drug sellers, theft of fencing materials, and illegal encroachments in the form of shops.

Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi raised concerns over garbage inside the premises and directed officials to coordinate with Karachi’s waste management authorities to improve cleanliness arrangements.

The committee also instructed relevant authorities to involve the inspector general of police and provincial police officials to ensure better law and order and security at the mausoleum.

Lawmakers further recommended including representatives from Karachi on the board managing the mausoleum’s affairs and decided to form a sub-committee to monitor ongoing work at the site.

Officials informed the committee that the Quaid-i-Azam Mazar Management Board has five officers in BS-17 and above and 107 employees from BS-01 to BS-16. The estimated budget for the financial year 2025-26 stands at Rs. 353.921 million.

The committee recommended that all four provinces contribute Rs50 million each for the maintenance and facilitation of visitors to the mausoleum. At the same time, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan should also contribute according to their capacity.

The meeting was also informed that renovation work at Awan-i-Nawadarat, a museum located within the mausoleum complex, is currently underway, with additional funding expected under the PSDP for 2026-27.
