The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned the public about a fake notification circulating on social media under the authority’s name. It said that it has not issued any such alert.
PTA termed the viral message false and misleading and advised users not to rely on or share unverified information.
The fake notification carrying PTA branding identifies the phone number (051) 7080507 and claims that users should not follow any voice instructions received from the number. It claims that merely answering the call could result in information stored on a mobile phone, as well as Easypaisa or other mobile accounts, being hacked.
The viral message further claims that the callers do not necessarily ask users to provide a one-time password (OTP). Instead, it alleges that software is linked to the phone number that can steal a user’s data during the call.
According to another claim contained in the fake notification, the scammers require only five to seven seconds to steal a victim’s information. The message also urges recipients to forward the warning to their family members and friends.
PTA has categorically clarified that it did not issue the notification and called it false and misleading.
The authority advised the public against sharing or relying on unverified social media posts.
