OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared a bold view on what a future shaped by artificial general intelligence, or AGI, could look like, thanks to its diruptively powerful capabilities.

In a recent post on X, Altman wrote that in a post-AGI future, “no one is going to work and the economy is going to collapse.”

The comments reflect Altman’s long-running belief that AGI could transform how society functions.

AGI generally refers to AI systems that can perform a broad range of tasks at or beyond the human level, rather than being limited to specific tasks.

Altman also wrote about switching to polyphasic sleep because GPT-5.5 in Codex is so capable that he does not want to miss time working while asleep.

The remarks came shortly after OpenAI introduced GPT-5.5, which the company described as its smartest and most intuitive model so far.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 is designed for a wide range of tasks, including writing, coding, research, and data analysis.

One of the main upgrades is improved ability to understand user intent, allowing the system to respond with less detailed prompting.

OpenAI said GPT-5.5 delivers stronger performance in agentic coding, computer use, knowledge work, and early scientific research.

The company said the model moves closer to working alongside users on a computer by seeing on-screen content, clicking, typing, navigating interfaces, and moving across tools with precision.

Altman’s comments renew questions about how advanced AI could affect employment and economic systems.

If AI systems can complete many tasks faster and more efficiently than humans, businesses and governments may need to rethink labor markets, education, and income models.

While AGI remains an evolving concept rather than a deployed reality, Altman’s remarks suggest he expects its long-term impact to be significant.
