The intense heat in Lahore, along with negligence by some residents, has led to a rise in diseases among sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.
Over the past two weeks, around 3,500 animals suffering from fever, cough, cold and tick infestations have been brought to the veterinary hospital.
According to officials, nearly 250 small and large livestock animals are being brought daily to the emergency unit of the government veterinary hospital in Lahore.
These animals are suffering from symptoms including cold, flu, fever, cough, diarrhea and other ailments.
Citizens said their sacrificial animals suddenly fell ill, forcing them to take the animals to the hospital. Veterinary experts said diseases are spreading because livestock are being kept in cramped spaces and alongside other sick animals.
They also said that feeding animals items such as bread, burgers, pizza and watermelon instead of proper fodder is making them sick. Experts added that tick infestation is also common among animals, and buyers should carefully check the body and ears of animals before purchasing them from the market.
Hospital management said free treatment is available 24 hours a day, along with medicines, and an ambulance service has also been arranged for the animals.
