The exiled son of Iran’s last Shah, Reza Pahlavi, on Saturday sharply criticized the state funeral for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, claiming it does not reflect the sentiments of the Iranian people.
In a post on X, Pahlavi said foreign representatives attending the ceremony should not interpret the event as a sign of national mourning. Millions attended Khamenei’s funeral while representatives from many countries paid tribute to the martyred Ayatollah.
“Iran is not mourning him,” Pahlavi wrote, alleging that the country is instead mourning “more than 40,000 sons and daughters” whom he accused the Iranian leadership of killing during protests.
He also described the funeral as a “propaganda spectacle,” claiming the government had spent large sums of public money to organize the event while asserting that “not a single democratic leader” attended.
Pahlavi further argued that the public mood in Iran is one of anger rather than grief, saying widespread frustration with the country’s leadership would eventually bring down the Islamic Republic.
Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also attended the state funeral.
