The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board has approved the introduction of artificial intelligence education for students up to grade five in schools across the province.

The plan includes setting up AI laboratories in primary schools and introducing a regular curriculum to support the new subject.

Officials said the province will also hire qualified educationists on a contract basis because government schools currently lack the specialized staff needed to teach AI.

The program will roll out in two phases. In the first phase, Punjab will introduce AI as a separate subject in the primary curriculum. In the second phase, the government will establish modern science and AI labs to give students practical learning experience.

Officials said the province has also prepared a backup plan in case of budget constraints. Under that option, basic AI lessons will be included in existing science textbooks.

The final approval for publishing the curriculum is expected in the next board meeting, while the full rollout is planned for the 2027 academic year.
