The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has launched a modern QR Panic Button System for public transport under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aiming to enhance passenger safety and improve emergency response across the province.
According to officials, the system will be installed in buses, vans, rickshaws, and other public transport vehicles. Developed in-house by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, the QR-based safety feature will be available free of charge through the Public Safety App and the Safe City website.
Authorities said the platform combines 12 key safety features in a single system, offering services such as emergency calls, video calls, live chat, location sharing, vehicle verification, and instant police assistance.
Passengers will be able to scan the QR code to access details about the vehicle owner and driver. In case of an emergency, they can directly contact the Safe City Control Room through a call, video call, or live chat linked to the 15 emergency helpline.
The system will automatically transmit the passenger’s live location and vehicle information to the control room, enabling authorities to respond quickly and effectively.
Safe Cities officials added that drivers will also be able to use the panic button to seek immediate assistance during emergencies.
The authority has also introduced an automated verification mechanism. If a vehicle changes ownership, the existing QR Panic Button will be deactivated automatically, and a new code will be issued once the ownership records are updated.
Punjab Inspector General of Police said the QR Panic Button System will strengthen communication between citizens and law enforcement agencies, while promoting smarter and technology-driven policing.
Managing Director Ahsan Younas said the initiative aims to transform public transport into a comprehensive digital safety network and set a new benchmark for passenger security across Punjab.
