Pakistan Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar on Friday warned of protests if the government fails to address farmers’ demands within three days, while calling for the formation of an autonomous commission to investigate losses in the wheat sector.

Speaking at a press conference, Khokhar said farmers had suffered losses of around Rs. 2,200 billion over the past two years, which he attributed to policy failures, low pricing, and administrative mismanagement.

He demanded the establishment of a high-level independent commission, headed by the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, to review developments over the past three years and determine responsibility.

Khokhar criticised the government’s wheat pricing, stating that the production cost stood at Rs. 3,410 per maund in August 2024, while wheat was sold at Rs. 2,700. He added that prices dropped further to Rs. 2,200 in 2025.

He questioned the status of the minimum support price, saying that as of April 24, private companies selected by the government had not procured any wheat.

He also called for the immediate abolition of the Price Control Department, alleging that it had failed to support farmers and instead created difficulties for them.

Referring to earlier policies, Khokhar said the effects of wheat imports in 2023 were still impacting farmers, while initiatives such as the Electronic Warehouse Receipt (EWR) system had not been implemented.

He further criticised the government’s claims regarding free gunny bags, stating that such packaging is typically the responsibility of buyers rather than farmers.
