The Federal Ombudsman for Protection Against Harassment (FOSPAH) has imposed a collective fine of Rs2.7 million on five officials of a private company after finding them guilty of sexual harassment and retaliatory behavior against a female employee.

The complainant informed the Ombudsman that multiple executives subjected her to inappropriate conduct, including unwanted invitations for meetings outside the office, inappropriate physical contact, and derogatory remarks.

When she attempted to report the behavior, internal mechanisms failed her; one official neglected to secure crucial CCTV footage, while others initiated retaliatory actions, eventually forcing her to resign and withholding her dues.

During the hearings, the accused attempted to target the victim’s personality and attire. However, the Federal Ombudsman categorically rejected these arguments, stating that a woman’s personality or social behavior is not a defense for harassment.

The verdict clarified that politeness does not equal consent, and a safe work environment is a fundamental duty of the employer.

Confirming the harassment and retaliation through witness statements and forensic evidence, the Ombudsman fined the five individuals a total of Rs2.7 million.

Additionally, the private institution has been directed to reconstitute its anti-harassment committee within 30 days to ensure future compliance with legal requirements.
