The government may increase taxes on petrol again as it looks to secure higher revenues and meet IMF conditions, Finance Ministry sources told ProPakistani.

Petroleum levy collections are already expected to exceed the annual target of Rs. 1,468 billion, but discussions are underway to push the levy even higher in the coming months.

This comes just days after the government raised the petroleum levy on petrol by around Rs. 27 per litre, taking it to over Rs. 107 per litre, as part of IMF-linked fiscal measures.

Sources say the IMF has continued to push Pakistan to remove subsidies and rely more on direct taxation, including higher petroleum levies, to maintain fiscal discipline. The government has reportedly assured the IMF that it will continue with tight financial management.

Pakistan has already seen sharp fuel price increases in recent months due to global oil shocks and regional instability, with domestic prices rising largely due to taxation rather than international price movements.
