Pakistani tourists should delay their travel plans for Europe for some time as sexually transmitted diseases there have reached their highest level in more than a decade, according to BBC.

Gonorrhoea and syphilis are both at their worst level so far, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

Gonorrhoea cases are so far up 106,331 across participating European countries, a 303 percent increase compared with 2015. Syphilis cases also more than doubled over the same period, reaching 45,557.

The rise is being driven in part by gaps in testing and prevention, warning that both infections can cause serious long-term complications, including infertility, chronic pain, and neurological or cardiovascular damage in untreated cases.

They also reported a rise in congenital syphilis, where the infection is passed from mother to newborn, with cases nearly doubling in a year.

Spain recorded the highest number of cases among participating countries in 2024.

Chlamydia remains the most commonly reported bacterial STI in Europe, although cases have declined slightly since 2015.

The UK is not included in the latest ECDC dataset following Brexit, but figures from the UK Health Security Agency show continued high infection levels.

England recorded 71,802 gonorrhoea cases and 9,535 syphilis cases in 2024, along with 168,889 chlamydia diagnoses. The UK also introduced a gonorrhoea vaccination programme in 2025 after record-high infections the previous year.

Doctors continue to stress prevention through condom use, regular testing, and vaccination where available.
