Salman Ali Agha is likely to replace Shan Masood as Pakistan’s new red-ball captain as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) prepares to finalize the squad for the upcoming tours of England and the West Indies.

According to sources, Shan Masood’s future as Pakistan’s Test captain is under review, with discussions ongoing over a possible leadership change ahead of the team’s demanding red-ball assignments.

The final decision regarding Pakistan’s Test captaincy is expected to be made by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Reports suggest that Salman Ali Agha, who is currently Pakistan’s T20I captain, is being seriously considered for the Test captaincy as well.

Shan Masood was appointed Pakistan’s Test captain in 2023 before the Australia tour, where his tenure began with a 3-0 series defeat. Overall, he has led Pakistan in 16 Test matches, winning four and losing 12, with a win percentage of 25.

Pakistan recently suffered a 2-0 home series whitewash under Masood’s captaincy, which marked another major setback for the side. Since taking charge, he has overseen seven Test series, with his only series victory coming in a 2-1 home win against England in 2024.

With selectors expected to announce a 17-man squad shortly, reports indicate that the leadership issue remains open. Any final decision is expected to be aligned with the PCB’s long-term red-ball restructuring plan.

Pakistan is expected to depart for the West Indies on July 13, where they will play a four-day warm-up match from July 18.

The series will be played in Trinidad and Tobago from July 25 to 29 and August 2 to 6.

Pakistan’s Test tour of England will begin on August 19 at Headingley, Leeds. The second Test will be played at Lord’s from August 27, while the third Test is scheduled at Edgbaston, Birmingham, from September 9.
